Not a bad place for a family holiday in the winter month’s. Plenty to see and do, especially those fountains. I’ve also enjoyed trips into the desert and the Mosque, one of the few which welcomes non Muslim visitors.

I feel exactly the same. I have a number of what I would consider very good friends who I first met online rather than in person. A few I have subsequently met in person, but the majority I will never actually meet. That doesn’t stop us being good friends though.

In fact, I am generally in contact with such friends much more than with ‘real’ friends – ‘little and often’ is the mantra – because the reason our paths crossed in the first place is that there is a clear common interest and usually a shared viewpoint that transcends everything else. It’s surely a better recipe for success than going on a blind date, say!

No, it wasn’t the cabbage, though I do know what you mean.
We all (wisely) moderated our vodka intakes so as not to sabotage our usual Sunday morning rides.
I am going to be quizzing one or two riders from the former USSR on the secrets of their success on http://www.velovoices.com in the coming months. Stay tuned.

It must be the cabbage! You were lucky not to wake up with a vicious hangover – my experiences of Russian / Azerbaijani dining are having to toast “Na zdorovye” and drink a shot of ‘vodka’ before speaking. Great fun but probably not the Russian secret to cycling success!
