Ramblings of a retiree in France
My submission to this year’s splendid Baking Contest published earlier would not fare too well at a picnic – too rich, too fussy and too small!
If you want to take part in this year’s competition, send photos of your baked goodies and picnic fayre to Mel: crushedcaramel@gmail.com. It’s going to be such a fun event. You won’t want to miss it!
I’ve previously talked about the French love of picnics which my beloved husband and I have fully embraced. So what better way to celebrate le 14 juillet than with a picnic worthy of The Great Bloggers’ Bake-Off on our terrace with friends prior to watching the magnificent local pyrotechnical displays.
Firstly, we needed to get comfortable with our trusty picnic hamper, cool box, ground sheet, tables and chairs, plus music!
Then we enjoyed a few homemade nibbles with some Aperol Spritzs to get the party started.
This was followed by cold buttermilk fried chicken, scotch eggs, quiches, mini tortillas, spinach pie and a selection of salads washed down with a spot of local rosΓ© fizz.
Dessert was fresh fruit and a selection of homemade sweet treats with coffee to bring the curtain down on a lovely evening before we settled back to watch the firework displays stretching from Nice to Cannes, more muted than in previous years, but still spectacular.
Yummy, yummy, yummy!

Incredible! What a spread!
We actually had a picnic today – we went hiking in County Wicklow – We shared a soggy shop bought sandwich, 2 overripe bananas, peanuts, pringles and a packet of jellies, water and coffee…. I was impressed at the time….π π π€£

The French have turned picnicking into an art, weβve just fallen in line.

Oh my goodness, I think I am in food coma just reading your post. As for your bake-off entry, I am swooning at the thought of digging into the multifold layers of the apple-pie-in-the-form-of-cake. Your beloved is truly fortunate. I hope he appreciates it. π I am also eyeing your picnic basket. Mine is dinky in comparison (certainly the thief of joy, ey!). I love the olive coloured rug strapped to it specially. xx

That hamper has come into its own in recent years. The French take picnicking to a whole new level.
