Ramblings of a retiree in France
Jim Adams of Song Lyric Sunday Challenge gives us plenty of notice about each Sunday’s prompts, today’s is Canadian artists. My beloved would have a field day with this: Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Avril Lavigne………. I, on the other hand, am going to pick a track by Drake.
No Canadian artist was able to achieve mainstream popularity until former child-actor-turned-rapper, Drake, put Canada on the hip-hop map – becoming one of the biggest-selling and influential rap stars in the world. From co-founding Canadian record label OVO (October’s Very Own) Sound to coining the city’s unofficial nickname, “The 6”, Drake is Canada’s biggest hypeman. Not only did he use the CN Tower for his Views album art, he even has a tattoo of the iconic Toronto landmark on his arm.
With over 170 million records sold, Drake is ranked as the world’s highest-certified digital singles artist by the Record Industry Association of America. He has won four Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, a record 27 Billboard Music Awards, two Brit Awards and three Juno Awards. Drake also holds several Billboard chart records; he has the most top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, the most charted songs (209) of any artists in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, the most simultaneously charted Hot 100 songs in a single week (27), the most time on the Hot 100 (431 weeks), and the most Hot 100 debuts in a week (22). He also has the most number-one singles on the Hot Rap Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Rhythmic Charts. Impressive or what?
I’ve selected quite probably his best selling track “One Dance” from Drake’s fourth studio album Views which was released in April 2016 and achieved huge commecial success, once again debuting at number one in both the United States and Canada, while also debuting at number one in the United Kingdom where it became his first number one album. “One Dance” became the most successful single of Drake’s career, becoming an international hit and peaking at number one in fifteen different countries. It has since also become the third most played song on streaming media service Spotify, with over one billion individual streams.
Baby, I like your style
Grips on your waist
Front way, back way
You know that I don’t play
Streets not safe
But I never run away
Even when I’m away
Oti, oti, there’s never much love when we go OT
I pray to make it back in one piece
I pray, I pray
That’s why I need a one dance
Got a Hennessy in my hand
One more time ‘fore I go
Higher powers taking a hold on me
I need a one dance
Got a Hennessy in my hand
One more time ‘fore I go
Higher powers taking a hold on me
Baby, I like your style
Strength and guidance
All that I’m wishin’ for my friends
Nobody makes it from my ends
I had to bust up the silence
You know you gotta stick by me
Soon as you see the text, reply me
I don’t wanna spend time fighting
We’ve got no time
And that’s why I need a one dance
Got a Hennessy in my hand
One more time ‘fore I go
Higher powers taking a hold on me
I need a one dance
Got a Hennessy in my hand
One more time ‘fore I go
Higher powers taking a hold on me
Got a pretty girl and she love me long time
Wine it, wine it, and she love me long time
Ooh yeah, very long time
Back up, back up, back up and wine it
Back up, back up and wine it, girl
Back up, back up, back up and wine it
Ooh yeah, very long time
Back, up, back up and wine it, girl
Ooh, tell me
I need to know, where do you wanna go?
‘Cause if you’re down, I’ll take it slow
Make you lose control
Where, where, where
Where, where, where, where (ooh yeah, very long time)
Where, where, where
Back, up, back up and wine it, girl (where, where, where, where=
‘Cause if you’re down (back up, back up and)
‘Cause if you’re down (back up, back up and)
‘Cause if you’re down (back up, back up and)
I need a one dance
Got a Hennessy in my hand
One more time ‘fore I go
Higher powers taking a hold on me
I need a one dance
Got a Hennessy in my hand
One more time ‘fore I go
Higher powers taking a hold on me

I had certainly heard of Drake but did not even know he was Canadian. I enjoyed learning more about him.

Drake brings me back to my high school days when I first heard of him. Didn’t know he was a child actor.
