Song Lyric Sunday #16

I really like that Jim Adams of Song Lyric Sunday Challenge gives us plenty of notice about each Sunday’s prompts. For today, I needed to think what tracks are in my record library with Smart/Stupid in the lyrics. Okay, how about  Smarter than You by The Undertones?

The track was on their 1979 debut album The Undertones released in May of that year. A re-released version of the album (housed in an alternate sleeve), was issued in October 1979 which also included The Undertones’ first two singles: “Teenage Kicks” and “Get Over You.”

The Undertones were a punk rock/New Wave band formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1975. From the period of 1975 to 1983, the Undertones consisted of Feargal Sharkey (vocals), John O’Neill (rhythm guitar, vocals), Damian O’Neill (lead guitar, vocals), Michael Bradley (bass, vocals) and Billy Doherty (drums). Although much of the earlier Undertones material drew influence from punk rock and new wave, the Undertones also incorporated elements of rock, glam rock and post-punk into material released after 1979, before citing soul and Motown as the influence for the material released in their final album. The Undertones released thirteen singles and four studio albums between 1978 and 1983 before Sharkey announced his intention to leave the band in May 1983, citing musical differences as the reason for the break up.

Lyrics: Smarter than You

I’m a little intellectual
Someone who knows it all
I could be your summer special
You could be my New York doll

My doll
My doll
My doll

I’m a little intellectual
Someone who knows it all
I could be your summer special
You could be my New York doll

My doll
My doll
My doll

Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Can’t you see I’m
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Can’t you see

I met you, we talk a little
Find you fascinating by five past ten
I kiss you and call you later
Cos I want to see you again
I want to see you again
I want to see you again

Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Can’t you see I’m
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Can’t you see I’m
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Can’t you see I’m
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Smarter than you
Can’t you see I’m smart
