Ramblings of a retiree in France
The Fondation Maeght is one of my favourite museums of modern art. It’s situated on a hill overlooking Saint-Paul de Vence, not too far from where I live. It was established in 1964 by Marguerite and Aimé Maeght and houses paintings, sculptures, collages, ceramics and all forms of modern art.
The past few weeks, I’ve featured sculptures from its beautifully landscaped sculpture garden. This time it’s the Giacometti Courtyard which displays an exceptional group of plaster sculptures by Alberto Giacometti – Homme qui marche I and II (Walking Man I and II), Femme debout I and II (Standing Woman I and II) and Grande tête (Large Head), made between 1959 and 1960. The works were commissioned for the Chase Manhattan Bank plaza in New York, but when that project was abandoned, the sculptures came to the Fondation Maeght.

They’re so skinny. It makes me feel guilty as I partake of Christmas cookies today.
Again, I’d love to visit this museum. I’ve got a friend near Toulouse. Is it far from there?
