Song Lyric Sunday #26

What do I have in my archives in response to Jim Adams’ prompt for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday Challenge which is Odd/Even? I know, what about one about Odds from the late Tupac Shakur?

Tupac (1971 – 1996) better known by his stage name 2Pac and by his alias Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor. He is considered by many to be one of the most influential rappers of all time. Much of Shakur’s work has been noted for addressing contemporary social issues that plagued inner cities, and he is considered a symbol of resistance and activism against inequality.

Born in Manhattan, he relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988 and then Los Angeles in 1993 to further pursue his music career. By the time he released his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, he had become a central figure in West Coast hip hop, introducing social issues in the genre at a time when gangsta rap was dominant in the mainstream. Shakur achieved further critical and commercial success with his follow-up albums Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z… (1993) and Me Against the World (1995).

Shakur became heavily involved in the growing East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry between 1995 and 1996, as amply illustrated in the track.  His double-disc album All Eyez on Me (1996) became certified Diamond by the American Recording Association. On 7 September 1996, Shakur was shot four times by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas; he died six days later and the gunman was never captured. The Notorious B.I.G., Shakur’s friend turned rival, was at first considered a suspect, but was also murdered in another drive-by shooting six months later. Five more albums have been released since his death, all of which have been certified platinum in the United States.

This track is the last one on the album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (commonly shortened to The 7 Day Theory or Makaveli) his fifth studio album by American rapper albeit credited as the alias Makaveli, his only album released under this alternative stage name. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 664,000 copies within its first week. By 1999, it was certified 4× Platinum by the American Recording Association.

Shakur is one of the best-selling music artists of all time having sold over 75 million records worldwide. In 2002, he was inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Rolling Stone named Shakur in its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Outside music, Shakur also gained considerable success as an actor, with his starring roles as Bishop in Juice (1992), Lucky in Poetic Justice (1993) where he starred alongside Janet Jackson, Ezekiel in Gridlock’d (1997), and Jake in Gang Related (1997), all garnering praise from critics. Who knows what else he might have achieved…………………………

Against All Odds contains disses (disrespect) towards a number of other rappers such as  Nas, Dr. Dre, and Mobb Deep. It contains a diss towards Bad Boy’s CEO, Sean “Puffy Daddy” Combs for failing to respond to Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight’s offer to stage a pay-per-view boxing event featuring bouts between Bad Boy and Death Row artists. It also has disses towards Haitian Jack, Jimmy Henchmen, and Stretch.

Lyrics: Against All Odds

One love, one love, one thug
One nation, twenty-one gun salute
I’m hoping my true motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
Against all odds, up in the studio, getting blowed
To the truest shit I ever spoke
21 gun salute, dressed in fatigue, black jeans and boots
Disappeared in the crap, all you seen was troops
This little nigga named Nas thinks he live like me
Talking bout how he left the hospital took five like me
You living fantasies, nigga I reject your deposit
We shook Dre punk ass, now we out of the closet
Mobb Deep wonder why nigga blowed them out
Next time grown folks talk, nigga close your mouths
Peep me, I take this war shit deeply
I see too many real playas fall to let these bitch niggas to beat me
Puffy, lets be honest you a punk
Or you gonna see me with gloves
Remember that shit you said in vibe about me being a Thug
You can tell the people you roll with whatever you want
But, you and I know what’s going on
Pay back I knew you bitch niggas from way back
Witness me strapped with macs knew I wouldn’t play that
All you old rappers trying to advance
It’s all over now, take it like a man
Niggas looking like, Larry Holmes flabby and shit
Trying to player hate on my shit, you eat a fat dick
Let it be known this is how you made me
Love it how I got you niggas going crazy, against all odds
I’m hoping my true motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
Against all odds, up in the studio, getting blowed
To the truest shit I ever spoke
Against all odds, I’m hoping my true motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
I heard he was light skinned, stocky with a Haitian accent
Jewelry, fast cars and he’s known for flashing (what’s his name)
Listen while I take you back and lace this rap
A real live tale, about a snitch named Haitian Jack
Knew he was working for the feds, same crime different trail
Niggas picture what he said, and did I mention
Promised a payback, Jimmy Henchmen, in due time
I knew you bitch niggas was listening, The World is Mine
Set me up, wet me up, niggas stuck me up
Heard the guns bust, but you tricks never shut me up
Touch one of mine on everything I own
I’ll destroy everything you touch, play the game nigga
All out warfare, Eye For An Eye
Last words to a bitch nigga, why you lie?
Now you gotta watch your back nigga, watch your front
Here we come gunshots to deck, now you stuck
Fuck the rap game nigga, nigga This M.O.B
So believe me, we enemies, I go, against all odds
I’m hoping my true motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
Against all odds, up in the studio, getting blowed
To the truest shit I ever spoke
Against all odds, I’m hoping my true motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
Puffy getting robbed like a bitch, to hide that fact
He did some shit he shouldn’t have did
So we ride em for that
And that nigga that was down for me
Resting dead, switch sides
Guess his new friends want him dead
Probably be murdered for the shit that I said
I bring the real, be a legend or even the dead
Lord listen to me
God don’t like ugly It Was Written
Hey Nas your whole damn style is weak
You heard my melody, read about my life in the papers
All my run-in with authorities, felonious capers
Now you want to live my life, so what’s the deal
Niggas that don’t ride right
You’ve seen too many movies
Load ’em up against the wall, close his eyes
Since you lie, you die, goodbye
Let the real life niggas hear the truth from me
What would you do if you was me (nigga), against all odds
Against all odds, I’m hoping my true motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
Against all odds, up in the studio, getting blowed
To the truest shit I ever spoke
Against all odds, I’m hoping my true motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
Against all odds, up in the studio, getting blowed
To the truest shit I ever spoke
