Ramblings of a retiree in France
What do I have in my archives in response to Jim Adams’ prompt for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday Challenge which is Long/Short/Small/Tall. There’s lots of obvious responses to this challenge, but what about Tall Trees by Crowded House?
The band were formed in Melbourne in 1985 by New Zealander Neil Finn (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter) plus Australians Nick Seymour (bass) and Paul Hester (drums). Later band members included Neil Finn’s brother, Tim Finn, and Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod. Neil Finn and Seymour (formerly both from Split Enz) have been the sole constant members of the group since its formation.
Active from 1985 to 1996, Crowded House had consistent commercial and critical success in Australia and New Zealand and some international chart success, largely with a self-titled debut album that reached number 12 on the US Album Chart in 1987 and provided the Top Ten hits “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “Something So Strong”.Further international success came in the UK, Europe and South Africa with their third and fourth albums. Neil and Tim Finn were each awarded an OBE in June 1993 for their contributions to music in New Zealand.
Tall Trees is the fourth track on their 1991 and third studio album Woodface released in 1991. The album was a major hit in Australia and New Zealand as well as giving the band their first top ten hit album in the UK.
Crowded House disbanded for the first time in 1996 after playing several farewell concerts.Prompted by the suicide of fomer band member Hester in 2005, the group re-formed with drummer Matt Sherrod and released two further albums (in 2007 and 2010), each of which reached number one in Australia. After several years of inactivity, Crowded House planned to tour the UK in 2020, but these concerts – like everyone else’s – have now been re-scheduled.
Watch out big ships are waiting
Salt frozen on your cheek
Saw a girl and boy arriving
And a steamer put out to sea
Tall tree stand in the distance
Remember when you were green
Don’t wipe the salt from your skin
You must keep running the distance
Sun sleeps on misty morning
Light years from channel three
I fell halfway to zero
Call me a hero I might just agree
Tall tree stand in the distance
Remember when you were green
Don’t wipe the salt from your skin
You must keep running the distance
And the roses you grow
Have a powerful scent
They’ll be breaking your heart
By the morning
Tall tree stand in the distance
Remember when you were green
Don’t wipe the salt from your skin
You must keep running the distance
