Ramblings of a retiree in France
This week’s prompt is Fix/Make. So what do I have in my musical archives in response to Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday Challenge? I’m thinking how about She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals.
Fine Young Cannibals were a British rock band from Birmingham, England. Formed in 1984, by bassist David Steele, guitarist Andy Cox (both formerly of The Beat), and singer Roland Gift (formerly of the Akrylykz). Their name came from the 1960 film All the Fine Young Cannibals starring Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood.
The band’s self-titled 1985 debut album contained “Johnny Come Home” and a cover of “Suspicious Minds”, two songs that were top 40 hits in the UK, Canada, Australia and many European countries.
She Drives Me Crazy was released in 1988 and included on the band’s 1989 album The Raw & the Cooked. Peaking at No. 5 on the British singles chart in January 1989, the record was the band’s highest charting single in their native UK. The single proved an even bigger hit in the US, topping the Billboard Hot 100 on 15 April 1989 for one week and becoming the first of two chart-topping singles for the band on that chart. The single also reached No.1 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart, as well as in countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, New Zealand and Spain. It reached the top 3 on several European charts including Belgium, Germany, Iceland, Ireland and Switzerland. In 2018, Time Out magazine listed “She Drives Me Crazy” at No. 28 in their countdown of The 50 best ’80s songs.
Two music videos were produced for the song, one by Philippe Decouflé and another by Pedro Romhanyi. As with Decouflé’s only other music video (for New Order’s “True Faith”), his version includes extensive choreography and performers in unusual costumes. The video received several nominations at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, including “Best Video”.
Fine Young Cannibals disbanded in 1992, although they briefly returned to the studio in 1996 to record a new single to complement their greatest hits compilation The Finest released that year. In the early 2000s, Gift (without Steele or Cox) reactivated the band name and toured as Roland Gift and the Fine Young Cannibals. He’s since gone on to enjoy an acting career.
I can’t stop the way I feel
Things you do don’t seem real
Tell me what you’ve got in mind
‘Cause we’re running out of time
Won’t you ever set me free?
This waiting ’round’s killing me
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can’t help myself
I can’t get any rest
People say I’m obsessed
Everything you say is lies
But to me there’s no surprise
What I had for you was true
Things go wrong, they always do
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can’t help myself
I won’t make it on my own
No one likes to be alone
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can’t help myself
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can’t help myself
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can’t help myself
