Ramblings of a retiree in France
Switched on my office laptop this morning and the on/off button appears to have given up the ghost. It’s a Dell which has rendered over 11 years of faithful service. To be honest, I only use it really for our company stuff but obviously it’ll now be heading for the big scrapyard in the sky.
It’s currently in the tender mitts of our PC guy whom we’ve used for the past 15 years. He’s utterly reliable, unlike our ISP, and I’m expecting a call late tomorrow letting me know that he’s transferred all my photos and documents. Meanwhile I have a call booked for Wednesday afternoon when, God willing, I shall finally be reconnected…..or not!
Good luck with this marathon of no access.

That’s so frustrating, I hope she (the laptop) pulls through ok.
My last one was a Dell and lasted for 11 years as well. I still have it and it would probably still work, but it got to the point where Windows XP Pro was just too old and it couldn’t be upgraded.
This one is 3 years old now and still going strong. Yes another Dell, in my experience they can’t be beat.

Oh…That is what I thought too but…I bought a new Dell, over $1000, I had only had it 6mos when the on/off button went out. They said it was no longer available and sent me a “referb” that was not as nice as my new one. Needless to say my thoughts for Dell slipped. I still use the referb but it is on and off again.

Well, after 11 years, I really can’t complain.

Good luck!
I couldn’t find anyone to install a new laptop battery (which I was providing; requires keyboard removal) for less than $75 labor. The computer is old (33bit) so, instead, I bought a used 64bit laptop. I’ve yet to see decide whether that was a good or bad thing.

I’m fortunate in that I have a very reliable PC guy and am happy to follow his advice.

Well, I’m supposed to be a “reliable PC guy”, after all my college courses. I could do the battery swap myself but only if I want a ton of cat fur inside the computer.
I haven’t blogged about the used PC because I’m so annoyed with myself for overlooking some specs that are important to me… #1 being the power connection. It’s still a BIG improvement over my other computers and wasn’t expensive. I’m trying to process it as a short-term solution. I can buy something better after I find a better job!

Damn, but 11 years is good service out of a laptop! They’re certainly not made to last these days…

I got 12 years out of my last Dell and the only thing wrong with it is that it couldn’t be upgraded beyond Windows XP. My new one, which was 2 years old when I got it, has been doing well for 3 years now and no problems at all.
Both are really solid laptops, heavy and not flimsy. Nothing to complain about.

I agree my previous Dell lasted a similar time too

What a mess. In the “good old days” one could go down to someplace like Fry’s Electronics and just buy a new power switch. Irony is, back then the majority of parts never broke. You couldn’t kill a 1980s keyboard by anything short of running it over with an 18 wheeler. Even today you COULD be able to just put the PC into a new case. If you got 11 years out of that machine though, it’s earned a retirement. 🙂 A new PC will be so fast by comparison it’s scary.
Your internet situation is also exactly why I mistrust BOTH big business and socialism. Ultimately both have so much control that they answer to nobody. Hope you get it resolved soon. 🙂

A tually, I’ve gotten plenty of mileage out of all my equipment except printers, so I can’t really complain. Just sorry to see the back of a faithful and reliable friend.
Don’t even get me started on Orange……..my next call from them is scheduled for tomorrow!
