Musical Monday: Prince

Yet another of my musical heroes who is no longer with us. I first encountered Prince in the early 80s when he performed a limited set including Little Red Corvette at The Camden Palace in London. The audience were enchanted! 

Prince’s career was marked by a sort of insatiable musical wanderlust, every masterpiece (and there were so, so many) seeming to double as yet another turning point. One of the most significant of these was Little Red Corvette, the breakout single from his album 1999 that gave him a bona fide pop hit, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1983. Prince was 24 when he recorded Little Red Corvette, and almost 40 years later it remains the greatest song ever written about casual sex.

One of my other favourites, Lenny Kravitz, had both a working relationship and genuine friendship with Prince and the two spent plenty of time together over the years even crashing one another’s concerts. Sadly, that never happened when I attended either of their concerts!

So it’s entirely appropriate that when Prince was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Lenny led the tribute…….
