Musical Monday: Cover songs #4

I’m kicking off 2023 with a series of my favourite cover songs. It’s quite amazing how many artists cover one another’s songs. Sometimes they’re not artists you might expect, sometimes they are. This is one of my all time favourite songs and I love both versions.

Although Roberta Flack’sKilling Me Softly” (follow link to listen to track) is timeless, Lauryn Hill brought something entirely new to the table when the Fugees covered it in 1996. Her velvety smooth voice is immediately striking, but it’s her ability to convey such a palpable feeling of hurt and devastation that make the Fugees’ reggae-infused soulfulness here so remarkable. The mid-tempo beat allows Hill time to draw out syllables and intermittently mingle with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel’s vocal riffing. Though their time as a group was cut short far too soon, their unforgettable edition of “Killing Me Softly” immortalised them.

Which version do you prefer? Let me know below.

  2. Grown up with the Roberta version and always loved it. The Fugees version is wonderful too as they have taken a great song and made it their way which is much better than copying the original song

  3. This is one of my favorites. Have you seen the “Pop Up Video” version of this song? Apparently they shot an entirely different video before this one.
