Ramblings of a retiree in France
I’m a big music fan so thought it might be nice to take part in Bee’s ” Love is in Da Blog” Challenge for the month of February.
Today’s prompt is a love song from Scandinavia but I shan’t be posting one from Abba, one of my beloved’s favourite artists. Instead, I shall plump for one from Norwegian synth-pop band A-ha which was formed in Oslo in 1982. Founded by Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (guitars and vocals), Magne Furuholmen (keyboards, guitars and vocals) and Morten Harket (lead vocals), the band rose to fame during the mid-1980s.
Their debut album Hunting High and Low in 1985 yielded two international number-one singles: Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines on T.V. and earned the band a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist.
Take On Me originated from Pål Waaktaar’s and Magne Furuholmen’s previous band Bridges and they initially thought the riff was too pop-oriented for A-ha. But singer Morten Harket thought the keyboard riff had the character of a universal hit sound. And, he was proved correct!
The video above (the second one) was filmed in 1985 at Kim’s Cafe (now called Savoy Cafe) (corner of Wandsworth Road and Pensbury Place, London SW8), and on a sound stage in London. The video uses a pencil-sketch animation and live-action combination called rotoscoping, in which the live-action footage is traced using a frame-by-frame process to give the characters realistic movements.

Hunting high and low haunted my teenage years but I always thought take on me a bit irritating. Even though the video was groundbreaking 🤗
