Ramblings of a retiree in France
I’m a big music fan so thought it might be nice to take part in Bee’s ” Love is in Da Blog” Challenge for the month of February.
Today’s prompt is for a love song from a female artist. This is very fertile ground but I’m picking an old favourite that’s recently enjoyed something of a renaissance: Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush.
Not every love song has to be sexy! There are far friskier songs in Kate Bush’s later work, but her 1985 smash remains one of the greatest and strangest love songs of all time. Over that unmistakable electronic drum figure, synths that swoop like alien birds and Bush’s keening vocals work so harmoniously together that the song works more impressionistically than literally. But the ‘deal’ she describes is love, an annihilation of the self as she dreams of literally becoming the object of her affections so that she can better understand them.
Upon its original release, Running Up That Hill reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and was Bush’s first US Top 40 hit.
In 2012, a remix of the song featuring newly recorded vocals premiered during that year’s Summer Olympics closing ceremony, and entered the UK top 10 for one week, at number six.
In 2022, the song received renewed attention when it was featured in the fourth season of the Netflix series Stranger Things. Its appearance led to the song’s resurgence on charts around the world, topping the charts in eight countries, including the UK for three consecutive weeks. The song also reached a new peak of number three on the Billboard Hot 100.
