Musical Monday: Cover songs #20

I started 2023 with a series of my favourite cover songs. It’s quite amazing how many artists cover one another’s songs. Of course, some artists are better known for their covers than others.

When is a cover song better than the original? Only you can decide. This week I feature The Flaming Lips take on Madonnaโ€™s Borderline.

Allegedly, more astronauts are from Oklahoma than any other US state; probably because you can see more stars there. So it almost makes sense that Americaโ€™s biggest psychedelic band also claims the red dirt as its homeland. Here, the Flaming Lips (featuring Stardeath and White Dwarfs) show you what a Madonna song sounds like while speeding down I-44 on magic mushrooms with the windows rolled down.

This inventive iteration of Madonna’s highly-caffeinated ’90s hit starts out tenderly, leans into a glee club-style chorus, and finishes with a clamorous jam. Joyously complex and out there, somehow it works.

Which version do you prefer? Let me know below.
