Song Lyric Sunday #11

I like that Jim Adams of Song Lyric Sunday Challenge gives us plenty of notice about each Sunday’s prompts. Today it’s Brother/Sibling/Sister. I’m wondering whether to pick a song about siblings or a group with siblings, there are certainly plenty of the latter.

I’m going for one of the more obvious picks, the Bee Gees, even though only the oldest brother Barry is still going strong. The group formed way back in 1958 [yes, that long ago!] and consisted of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The trio were especially successful as a popular music act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and later as prominent performers of the disco music era in the mid-to-late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies; Robin’s clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry’s R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the mid-to-late 1970s and 1980s. The Bee Gees wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing a number of major hits for other artists.

Arguably, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (1978) was a turning point in their careers, with both the film and soundtrack having a worldwide cultural impact and enhancing the disco scene’s mainstream appeal. They won five Grammy Awards for Saturday Night Fever, including Album of the Year. The Band have sold an estimated 200 million records worldwide making them among the best-selling music artists of all time.

My pick is one of their 1970 numbers, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”, which was released in 1971 as the first single from the album Trafalger. More notably, it was their first US No. 1 single. The song appears in the 2013 film American Hustle and on its soundtrack.

Lyrics: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart

I can think of younger days
When living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do
I could never see tomorrow
But I was never told about the sorrow
How can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again
I can still feel the breeze
That rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by
We could never see tomorrow
But no one said a word about the sorrow
How can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling
How can you stop the sun from shining
What makes the world go round
And how can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again
La la la la la la, la la la la
La la la la la la, la la la la
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again
Da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da da, da
